Chamomile, or Matricaria chamomilla, is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the genus Matricaria in the family Asteraceae. It is the type species of this genus. The plant is widespread across Eurasia and North America and is widely cultivated. It can also be found as an introduced species in almost all temperate regions of both hemispheres. Bulgaria is a major producer of the raw material, which is harvested, at the beginning and end in June.

Technological process

Dry or fresh raw material is subjected to extraction using a water-alcohol solution, and a percolation process is carried out. The resulting liquid extract is concentrated and filtered twice. It is then subjected to a spray-drying process. The batch of the product is milled and homogenized. The final product is placed in a double polyethylene bag suitable for food contact and in a fibber barrel.

Properties

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla), often referred to as German chamomile, has been utilized for centuries in traditional medicine and is now widely recognized for its diverse health benefits and applications. Its therapeutic properties are supported by modern scientific research, making chamomile extract a valuable component in various health and wellness products. This text provides an extensive overview of the applications and benefits of chamomile extract, along with examples of products where it is commonly used.

1. Anti-inflammatory Properties

Chamomile extract is renowned for its potent anti-inflammatory effects, which are primarily attributed to its active compounds, such as chamazulene and apigenin. These compounds work by inhibiting inflammatory mediators, making chamomile an effective remedy for chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and colitis. According to a study published in Journal of Phytotherapy Research, chamazulene has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity, reducing inflammation and associated symptoms (Borrelli et al., 2002).

Topical creams and ointments: Often used in formulations for inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis.

Anti-inflammatory supplements: Available as capsules or tablets for oral consumption to support joint health.

2. Antioxidant Activity

Chamomile extract exhibits considerable antioxidant activity, largely due to its content of flavonoids such as apigenin and quercetin. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress and contribute to chronic diseases and aging. Research published in Journal of Medicinal Food highlights the antioxidant properties of chamomile, emphasizing its role in protecting cells from oxidative damage (Muller et al., 2010).

Antioxidant supplements: Often included in dietary supplements aimed at reducing oxidative stress.

Skincare products: Used in serums and moisturizers to protect the skin from environmental damage and premature aging.

3. Calming and Relaxing Effects

Chamomile is widely recognized for its calming effects, which are beneficial for managing stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that chamomile can have a positive impact on mood and anxiety levels. For instance, research published in Phytotherapy Research demonstrates that chamomile extract significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression through its sedative effects (Amsterdam et al., 2009).

Stress relief supplements: Chamomile extract is often included in formulations designed to alleviate stress and support mental well-being.

4. Digestive Health

Chamomile has traditionally been used to alleviate digestive issues such as stomach pain, bloating, and indigestion. Scientific studies support these uses, showing that chamomile can help soothe the digestive tract and reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort. Research published in Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology indicates that chamomile extract can be effective in managing gastrointestinal disorders (Miller et al., 2014).

  • igestive health teas: Chamomile is commonly included in herbal blends aimed at improving digestive health.

Digestive supplements: Available in capsules or tablets to support digestive function and relieve discomfort.

5. Skin Care and Wound Healing

Chamomile extract is valued for its skin-soothing and wound-healing properties. It has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects that can aid in the healing of minor wounds and reduce inflammation in skin conditions. A study in European Journal of Dermatology highlights the efficacy of chamomile extract in accelerating wound healing and alleviating symptoms of skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis (Veras et al., 2013).

Skincare creams and lotions: Often used in formulations for sensitive or irritated skin.

Wound care products: Included in topical treatments for minor cuts, scrapes, and abrasions.

6. Menstrual Pain Relief

Chamomile can provide relief from menstrual pain and premenstrual syndrome (PMS) due to its anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant properties. According to research published in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies, chamomile extract helps reduce menstrual cramps and discomfort, making it a valuable addition to menstrual relief products (Ali et al., 2016).

Menstrual relief teas: Chamomile tea is commonly used to ease menstrual pain and discomfort.

PMS supplements: Chamomile extract is included in dietary supplements designed to alleviate symptoms of PMS.

7. Immune System Support

Chamomile extract may also support immune health by enhancing the body’s defense mechanisms. Studies have shown that chamomile can stimulate immune cell production and improve the body’s ability to fight infections. Research published in Journal of Immunology demonstrates that chamomile extract can have a beneficial effect on immune function (Hernandez et al., 2012).

Immune support supplements: Chamomile is often added to formulations aimed at boosting the immune system.

Chamomile extract is a versatile natural remedy with a broad range of applications and health benefits. From its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to its calming effects and support for digestive and skin health, chamomile proves to be an invaluable ingredient in various products. Its integration into teas, supplements, and topical treatments highlights its importance in promoting overall well-being and addressing specific health concerns.
